FORMAT FAQs

WHAT'S AN EBOOK?

This term covers a lot of ground. It might mean any number of formats, from PDF to iBooks to MOBI (for Kindle) to EPUB. In our case, eBooks are delivered as PDFs and/or EPUBs and are available for immediate download after purchase.

WHAT'S A MULTIMEDIA EBOOK?
In our case, a Multimedia eBook refers to an eBook that has more than text and images. We offer both PDF and EPUB files with embedded videos: when you click on a video, it will play in a pop-up frame in the eBook.

The Multimedia PDFs are accompanied by a folder of videos. In order for the Multimedia eBook to function properly, you’ll need to keep everything in the folder arrangement it was originally delivered with. If you move the video files or the PDF, the eBook can’t find the proper video to play. Some titles, such as Peter Krogh's Organizing Your Photos with Lightroom 5, are also available as a Print Edition + DVD combo. The DVD includes the Multimedia PDF as well as all the videos that correspond to each chapter and number in the printed book.

The Multimedia EPUBs will play on iPads and tablets with video capability. (While almost all tablets and e-readers will play a normal text-only EPUB, our Multimedia EPUBs will only play on tablets and smartphones with video capabilitiy.) For example, Kindle does not yet support embedded video, so we don’t have a MOBI version.

WHY TWO VERSIONS: PDF AND EPUB?

We need to have two electronic versions because the basic EPUB readers for computer cannot play embedded videos, and no tablet software can yet play PDFs with embedded videos.

WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS?

Our PDFs should be compatible with any device that can open and display a PDF file. This could be a computer, tablet or even phone, (though we have not optimized for phone). Any computer that can run Lightroom 5 should be able to view a PDF. You may need to download the free Adobe Reader application in order for video files to launch and play. The built-in Apple program Preview will not play the video files. Tablets such as iPads will be able to read the PDF but the videos will not play.

For the EPUBS, you'll need an iPad or iPhone to view the book in iBooks, or an Android tablet with an EPUB reader. You’ll want to first download the Multimedia eBook to your computer, and then move it to the tablet. For iPad, you open iTunes and drag the file to the iPad’s “Books” section. For Android, you’ll want to follow the directions in the EPUB reader of your choice.

HOW BIG ARE THE EBOOKS?
At the moment, they range in size from 200k for a smallish PDF eBook with no videos to 2GB for a Multimedia PDF. The Multimedia EPUBs are around 1GB, with their videos slightly downsized from the PDF version.

DO YOU OFFER IBOOKS OR KINDLE-FRIENDLY FORMATS?

No. Due to the embedded videos, the file size currently prevents us from converting to .mobi.

WILL YOU GIVE ME A FREE UPGRADE IF YOU PUBLISH A NEW FORMAT?
If we add a format option to a version of a book you have bought from us, we will let you have that new format free or, at the very least, a reduced price. So, for example, with the publication of the EPUB version of Peter Krogh's MultiCatalog Workflow, anyone who has bought the PDF version can get the EPUB at no additional charge.

THIS POLICY ONLY APPLIES TO NEW FORMATS OF THE SAME BOOK VERSION. New major versions will be paid upgrades.
